Playground Bar is situated near the Civic in the heart of the city at Garema Place. This is a little tapas bar with quirky decors and fun atmosphere. My friends came here last month for a catch up, so I was excited when Rita said she is willing to come here again. As soon as I walked in, I noticed the ropes hanging over the ceiling, had a contemporary feel to it.We were seated at a high-rise table with bar stools, it was fairly quiet at 6.30 pm. The waitress gave us a “winter menu” on a printed piece of A4 paper and took our orders using her iphone.
To our surprise, there were only 4 tapas on the “snack bars” menu, ther rest were normal bar foods. Rita said they must have had a change in menu since there were definitely more tapas available last time. We ordered 4 tapas to share and 1 waygu beef burger- which they were able to cut in half for us. We had “Pork crackling with bacon cream & spiced chilli salt” which was AUD$7, “Twice cooked rustic duck fat potatoes with roast garlic & rosemary” which was AUD$8, “Field mushroom ricotta & crushed pistachio bruschetta” was AUD$10, “Zucchini flowers with lemon scented labna, fried in ras el hanout” and “Waygu beef & smoked cheddar burger with porter mustard, house pickled gherkins & sweet potato chips” were AUD$12 each.
Rita and I were a bit disappointed at the pork cracklings, since we thought they were actual pork. Instead they were just like prawn crackers you get from Asian restaurants. The duck fat potatoes were highly recommended by Rita, it indeed was delicious, nicely fused with garlic and rosemary taste. My favorite dishes that night were the zucchini flowers and the bruschetta. I have never seen or eaten a whole zucchini flower, it was quite an experience. I love it after each bite, I can taste the goodies inside the flowers. As for the bruschetta, my love for bread and mushrooms just won’t go wrong.
The waygu beef burger was a nice way to fill up our stomach. The patties were well made and very tasty. The sweet potato chips were irresistible, they were so crunchy I couldn’t stop eating until they all gone. It was quite a cheap meal for amount of food we had. Next time I will be keen to go over there and have a main to myself since the price is quite cheap for dinner at that location. After dinner we left room for desserts at KoKo Black across the street. That was another sweet guilt.
