To save cost on our travel for our “Gap Year”, we have boarded more than 20 different budget airlines across the world. Budget airlines have many extra charges such as for luggage and food and if we were not careful, we would be paying significantly extra. There are few things to be wary of when taking budget airline and as we have been traveling on a budget of a whole year, we believe the following are five important budget airline travel tips to take note.
When Winny and I decided to travel extensively this year, there is one budget we kept to the minimal and that is the food budget. In total we only spent less than $2500 AUD per person for a whole year on food and we did spend some time in expensive places and countries like Iceland and Scandinavia region. One of key to eat on a budget is to cook when and where it is possible and appropriate.
During our budget backpackers travel for the whole of last year, we nearly exclusively stayed in a hostel or at an Airbnb. The main reasons will be to keep the accommodation budget cost down. With a whole year’s worth of experience, we like to share our opinion on the pros and cons of Hostels vs Airbnb.
Today’s itinerary will be the highlight of our trip. We are heading into the Sahara desert and camping there for one night. Winny has adored the world famous book “Little Prince” when she was 8 and she has looked forward to staying in the Sahara desert ever since. Spending a night at the Sahara desert tonight will be a dream come true for her and I will be following her into the desert to look for the “Little prince”.
Porto is the second largest city in Portugal. It is becoming more and more popular in the recent years. The old town was listed as world heritage site by UNESCO in 1996. This beautiful city is built on a gradual slope with red colored tiled roof and building featuring the pretty patters of Portuguese tiles. Although many of the cities oldest buildings are abandoned and are at the verge of collapsing, it adds to another character to the city.
After walking through a secret tunnel, we arrived at the middle of the spiral staircase underground. It was a mysterious place that we thought only existed in fairy tales. Looking up we could see the perfect circular skylight dimly illuminating the artistic spiral that spans from the top to bottom. This was the most anticipated place for us to see in Quintra Da Regaleira in Sintra, Portugal.
We did our glacier hike in Skaftafell National Park, a place that holds the largest ice deposit in Iceland. The company we went with, Glacier Guides, hikes the Falljökull Glacier. Falljökull Glacier has a glacier that has a spectacular ice fall, something that is equivalent to a waterfall for a glacier. The journey up Falljökull Glacier was an adventurous one!
Caminito del Rey was known to be the “world’s most dangerous walkway” after many adventurers and thrill seekers died challenging the old pathway. In 2011, the local government began to restore and rebuild the walkway. The new path was opened in March 2015 and it is now listed as one of the best new attractions for 2015 by Lonely Planet.
This was my third time in Barcelona and we thought it would be nice to find a good value Barcelona Michelin lunch. From the Michelin Guide’s Official Website we found that there are 26 restaurants in Barcelona awarded Michelin stars. Many of these Michelin restaurants offers good value Michelin lunch sets so we look a little further to find one with the best value.
We have just finished our 15 day trip in Iceland and want to share some of our experiences on how to find and take pictures of the Northern Lights. Spotting the Northern lights can be a little difficult if you have not seen one with your eyes before. Usually the Northern Light appears significantly different to our naked eyes compared to what can be captured on the camera.
